UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - The University of Richmond cross country and track & field teams are set to welcome another strong recruiting class to campus when 17 women and six men report in August. The Spiders' director of cross country/track & field Lori Taylor and head men's coach Steve Taylor made the announcement Friday.

2010 Cross Country Roster
2010-11 Track & Field Roster

Highlighting the list of 17 women is Jill Prentice, ranked as one of the premier distance runners in both the state of New Jersey and the Eastern U.S. during this past outdoor season, and Molly Reilly, who was the Rhode Island Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year in 2010.

The list of six men is punctuated by Ryan Lee - the all-time state of Delaware record-holder in the 3,200m and Adam Owens - the owner of multiple Virginia state titles.

These 23 student-athletes join the Spiders' program, which is recognized among the top collegiate running programs in the East. Richmond has sent multiple athletes to NCAA postseason competition, with 2010 marking the Spiders' eighth-consecutive season with representation at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Regional Championship. Matt Llano, who returns for his redshirt senior in 2010-11, earned All-America status with his ninth-place finish in the 10,000m in the 2010 NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

"Our staff did a great job recruiting, said Lori Taylor. "These men and women will help us fill the void we have in a few areas. We are excited about the level of our incoming distance and middle distance runners along with our track & field recruits. Many of these athletes will have an immediate impact for our team. I also believe there are a couple that will step in and have an immediate impact within the Atlantic 10 Conference and the NCAA Region. That is our expectation for our recruited athletes. We want them to be ambitious, competitive and filled with the desire to do what is required at this level to become the best. We have upperclassmen that will lead the way, but we do not want our freshmen to follow for long. We want leaders and this group has a lot of the potential our program expects so we can achieve our goals."

Also among the incoming female standouts are Roxanne Henningson, Alli Mannon and Grace Gibson.

"As a staff we are happy with the 17 women and 6 men that will join us this fall," said Steve Taylor. "We are pleased with the growing interest from top student-athletes in our program and the continued desire to earn the quality education the University of Richmond offers. Each year, as our athletes improve and earn greater and greater achievements, we notice more of the top athletes within the country taking a closer look at what we have to offer. There is no question that the new Robins Stadium at the Fred Hardy Track shows recruits how committed we are at becoming the best. Our track & field facility is now one of the premier venues in the nation. We've never met a recruit that has visited our campus and not fallen in love with it. Our new stadium puts an exclamation point to the direction we are headed."

The Richmond program calls the $25-million E. Claiborne Robins Stadium home in 2010. The state-of-the-art facility, which will rank among the top track & field venues on the East Coast, is located in the heart of the Spiders' campus and features seating for 8,700, a massive video scoreboard and luxury suites. The stadium also serves as the home for Richmond football and lacrosse.

"Our new Robins Stadium is already having a positive impact as we begin to turn our attention to next year's recruiting class. We have an amazing facility with a huge video board, brand new long/triple jump runways and locker rooms within the stadium. Anyone that has been in the stadium has been very impressed. In my opinion it's the best track & field venue in the East."

The cross country team opens the 2010 season Saturday, Sept. 4 by hosting the Spider Alumni Open.

Fishing with my Brother and Friend on the New River

Literally, 29 hours out of 48 hours were spent on the New River casting for smallmouth...

The New River in Giles County, Virginia.

For those that know me, you know that I have two passions...Of course running/track & field is at the top of the list...and the second is fishing, especially on the lower New River for smallmouth bass surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia. Specifically the passion is the pursuit of 20+inch smallmouth in the fast moving rapids found throughout the 37 miles of New River stretched throughout Giles County...

Here's a short story about 2 days I recently spent with my brother Mike and lifelong family friend, Roger Bailey canoeing the New River in pursuit of those giant Virginia smallmouth at our place in Giles County, Virginia.

Our cabin...our escape.
Several years ago Lori and I purchased 70 acres of land overlooking the New River in Giles County. It's a great place to escape and enjoy the outdoors, especially if you like fishing. The county is amazing...with places like "The Cascades"... "Mountain Lake Resort" which is where the Patrick Swayze movie classic "Dirty Dancing" was filmed in 1987...and miles of endless running, biking and hiking trails. My dad and brothers are in the timber industry (One of our nations few renewable resources.) in my hometown of St. Marys, West Virginia. A few years ago, shortly after Lori and I purchased our land, they harvested timber from land we own in my hometown of St. Marys and put it through their lumber mill cutting the lumber we needed to build a 20'x24' cabin (shown above). It's a rustic place by all standards...with no electricity... Just the way we like and prefer it. The idea is, it's a place to escape....It's one of the few places remaining with limited cell phone service.

We built the cabin with my 036 Stihl chainsaw...and nothing more. No skill saw...every cut on every board for the cabin was made with a chainsaw. It's extremely well put together I might add and was a fun project for Lori and I. With the help of my dad, 4 brothers and a couple friends (Howard Nippert and Mike Cox) we had the entire building up and under roof in 9 working days.

My oldest brother Mike with a 20 inch smallmouth bass...
He and my brother Clifford help coach the
2009 & 2010 State Champion T&F and XC teams
at our Alma Mater, St. Marys High School in St. Marys, WV.

My brother (Mike), Roger and I had the canoe loaded at the cabin on Thursday evening with everything ready for an early start the next morning. As Friday morning arrived, we were up and out the door…We had a quick breakfast before launching the canoe for our 7 ½ mile float down the New River for day one of our two day fishing adventure….We were on the water at 7:00AM and after we launched the canoe it did not take before we started catching smallmouth… Actually, I hooked a nice little a 14 incher on my first cast. From there we caught fish after fish…Mostly smallmouth…a few red eye, or rock bass depending on where you come from and also a few sunfish. The smallmouth's were what we were after though…

A short stop for lunch on the river.

Our lifelong family friend, Roger Bailey enjoying a sandwich.

Mike is ready to go...
We stopped at one of my favorite spots around 11:30AM for a sandwich…next to an area that always holds real good numbers of fish during the middle of the day. By noon we had already caught over 50 fish each… and that's no fish story. Some were big (a couple up to 20 inches) and some were small (around 10 inches)...
Even 10 inch fish are fun on ultralight tackle...

Roger didn't want his photo taken with this one...

Mike and Roger both landed several over 18 inches...

Our favorite way to fish...wading.

The river...photos do no justice to the beauty...

A 17 incher...

The limestone cliffs are impressive...

Roger with a 14 inch smallmouth.

By late afternoon we had lost track of the number of fish...

Roger with a 18.5 inch trophy.

Mike with another over 20 inches...

In all we spent 15 hours on the water the first day...We lost tract of the time and of the number of fish. We guessed that each of us landed between 120 and 150 during out first day.
The 2nd day the humidity dropped and so did the fishing,
but the scenery was impressive.

On the 2nd day we got into the water a little earlier, around 6:45AM. We were canoeing a section of the river that we had not been on before. I ran through this area on a long run years ago and knew it contained numerous rapids that, depending on water levels, could reach class III. No worries on this trip. The water levels were so low that most of the drops were no problem.
A quick stop in the middle of the New River.

On the 2nd day we spent a total of 14 hours on the water. That is actual river time and doesn't include the commute to get there...Day 2 was not nearly as good of a fishing day, but we still caught 80-90 fish each.
Slow, flat water...We saw lots of musky as we floated.

Figures...here's the only photo they took of me...
That is a fish I'm holding.

Mike in the middle of the river...Great smallmouth water.

We saw several Dobsonfly's...great samllmouth bait
as long as you know how to handle them.
They are big and they are mean.
Dobsonfly's (above) spend most of their life in the larval stage, during which they are called hellgrammites...Hellgrammites are one of the best baits for trophy smallmouth. They live under rocks at the bottoms of tributary streams and the New River. They pact an impressive, painful bites if you do not handle them correctly.

Mountain Lake Resort is seen in the distance

It's not possible to describe the feeling and total overload of the senses that a trip like this brings. The amount of wildlife we saw was remarkable...The smell of the freshwater...the views of the river and the mountains...and of course the fishing was unmatched. As we floated the New River I listened to the stories Mike and Roger shared. As I navigated with the paddle and listened I was taken back 40 years to my childhood days when we sat on the banks of the Middle Island Creek in my hometown. Aaaaaahhh, running IS life...and so is fishing! I understand my passion for both!

“I’m happy for Chris”, said Richmond Head Coach Steve Taylor. “He works hard and listens to our team leaders trying to emulate their footsteps by making sacrifices required to excel at the highest level of our sport. He knows this is a great opportunity for him and the USA Junior team to medal by making the podium (top 3 teams). That is their goal…He also knows that opportunities are for those ready and willing when they come along. As an athlete, if you want to achieve the most you must be ready when the opportunity presents itself. He has talked about this race and his interest in it for over a year and I’m happy he will have the opportunity. This event takes determination and high tolerance for pain.”

According to International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) President, Lamine Diak this will be the first year in the World Mountain Running Championships 26 year history the event will be held in Slovenia. Something not overlooked by the IAAF.
“The IAAF is very happy to continue strongly supporting the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), representing the world of mountain running...” said Diak. “I am also glad to see that this sport is moving outside its traditional heartlands to new parts of the world. In 2009, Africa held its first official Mountain Running Championships as part of the Obudu Mountain Race in Nigeria, and this spirit of global development matches that of the IAAF. Mountain running requires the athletic virtues of endurance and speed, but something special as well, in the sense that instead of a stadium, men and women are able to compete in harmony with some of nature’s most marvelous landscapes."

The World Mountain Running Championship takes a special set of talents and determination typically not matched in the flatlands as World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) President, Bruno Gozzelino said: “Mountain running is a discipline that excites each individual athlete but it also emphasizes the strength and the spirit of a team, of each nation represented with the opportunity to compete and contribute their best…The WMRA are very happy and grateful that Slovenia will host the event and it is fully appreciated by the IAAF - its President, Lamine Diack, and the General Secretary Pierre Weiss, who, as always give their full support to the Championships.

Kamnik is lovely Alpine town surrounded by green hills and high peaks of Kamnik Alps (2500 m, roughly 8300 feet above sea level; highest peak is Grintovec - 2558m, roughly 8500 feet). It is only 23 kilometers away from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and no more than 15 kilometers away from the international Airport. Due to its central position one can quickly reach all other sights and attractions of Slovenia. Kamnik is an ancient town of a thousand faces, with a rich history and numerous cultural pearls, with beautiful surroundings of natural beauty and a varied tourist offer.

In the Middle Ages, Kamnik was a flourishing trading town its own mint. The town’s wonderful architecture and sacral heritage, as well as the numerous myths and legends are a testament to its prosperous days. Kamnik is protected by Stari and Mali grad (Old and Small Castle on the surrounding rocky hills, and the church of St. Primus, famous for its fascinating Renaissance frescoes, on the slope of the near by Velika planina.

Kamnik is renowned by its visitors as a starting-point for walking tours. The most beautiful part of the town is certainly the old historical centre with the characteristic narrow streets, adorned with medieval and Baroque houses.

The main sights of the town is Zaprice Castle, which has been renewed to host a museum containing part of the private Sadnikar collection, the Franciscan monastery with a rich collection of old books and Plečnik’s Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. Variously thermed performances, concerts and other events are scheduled throughout the year at different venues in town. The Traditional National Costume Festival is an annual event that takes place during the second weekend of September and attracts the largest number of visitors.

The path by the banks of the river Kamniška Bistrica leads to the Volčji Potok Arboretum, where the visitors can stroll through the Baroque park with small lakes and plantations of various different flowers and more than 3000 species of trees and bushes from all over the world. The Arboretum Volčji Potok golf course is situated in a picturesque landscape in the midst of pine forest among ponds and other natural beauties.

To the east of Kamnik lies Tuhinj Valley, where the Snovik thermal spa was founded on the hot water spring.

Going north from Kamnik, you will arrive to the Kamniška Bistrica Valley, where you can enjoy the beauty of its unspoiled nature and its soothing coolness in the hot summer months. Kamniška Bistrica attracts the visits of trekkers, hikers, climbers, hunters and fishers. It is the most popular starting point for visiting the mountains that surround the valley.

Of all the picks in the region, Velika planina is the most visited. A cable car takes you to the summit of the plateau, where you can experience the life of the local Sheppard’s in the summertime and the wonderful walks, while it is a popular ski destination in the winter.
