WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Grace Gibson set a school record in the pole vault, while Heather Roush, Jill Prentice, and Meagan McGovern captured first-place as the Spiders kicked-off the outdoor track & field season on Saturday at the Tribe Invitational. The meet was held at Zable Stadium on the campus of William & Mary.

"Today was a good start to our outdoor season," said men's head coach Steve Taylor. "Our men and women competed hard and with purpose. It was fun to watch many of our freshmen, several who have not competed for our program yet this year and our upperclassmen who showed their leadership."

Freshman Grace Gibson placed fifth and set a school record in the pole vault (3.25m-10'08"). Her mark broke the previous 2004 record of 3.15m set by Cathy McClane.

Redshirt-senior Heather Roush clinched first in the javelin throw with a career best series - six throws over 40m. Her winning throw reached 42.91m, ranking 23rd best throw in the NCAA this season. Roush also placed third in the discus and was the second collegiate athlete with her throw of 43.01m (141'01").

Freshman Jill Prentice came in first-place in the 3K with a time of 10:06.54. One hour later she placed seventh in the 1,500m race with a time of 4:44.0.

Richmond's Llano (23rd) and Wilson (41st) at USA 15K Championships

Richmond's Matt Llano and Jon Wilson traveled south to Jacksonville, Florida during spring break to compete in the 2011 USATF 15K National Championships on March 12th. The Gate River Run enters its 34th year and has established itself as the largest 15K (9.3 miles) race in the USA.

This year the 15K national championship race included 14,972 runners. The event also included a 5K and kids races increasing the total participation to over 20,000 runners. The race served as the men's and women's national championships again this year and arguably boasted the deepest invited field in its 34 year history. (BFM photos)

Athletes warmed-up under nearly ideal conditions with no wind and cool temperatures in the upper 40's. Matt lined up next to Anthony Famiglietti...the man known to "Run Like Hell" in his documentary.

Llano next to Mo Trafeh. Trafah goes on to win the race with a time of 42:58...He also won the USA 1/2 Marathon Championships in February by outkicking Ryan Hall on the streets of Houston, Texas. His winning time in Houston was 1:02:17.

"Runners Set" for the start of the 34th running of the Gate River Run. Matt Llano (3rd from right) is surrounded by 60 invited runners and a total of 14,972 participants. It really was a true national championship with race organizers getting a large number of our nations elite athletes to compete. Most were attracted by an excellent prize money structure which included a check worth $17,000 going to the race winner.

...And they're off...14,972 runners take over the streets of Jacksonville, Florida participating in the 15K race which started and finished outside of the Jacksonville Jaguars Stadium...

After a 4:41 opening mile, Spider senior Matt Llano (right...in red top) is shown passing 2 miles in 9:15...Mo Trafeh threw in a 4:21 mile after passing 1 mile in 4:40. That move separated the field. Trafeh held the lead for the remainder of the race.

After his first mile of 4:45, Jon Wilson ran a 4:53 to go through 2 miles in 9:38... Wilson is showing excellent form going into the outdoor season. 8 months of good healthy and consistent training is showing in races and workouts.

Matt on the "Green Monster" which is the name given to the ominous bridge that towers over the city of Jacksonville. Racers climb the bridge at roughly 8 miles into the 15K (9.3 miles) race. Named by a runner years ago, the bridge lingers on the horizon during the race. It's a constant reminder throughout of what is to come later on.

Llano...continues UP the Green Monster...

Wilson climbing the Green Monster...Matt and Jon said that it was not nearly the "monster" they thought it would be. "Old Gun Road" near campus prepared them for what they were to face.

Llano approaches the finish. He placed 23rd in the USA 15K National Championship race with an official time of 45:12. That's an average of 4:52 per mile for the event (9.3 miles).

Wilson also ran an excellent race. Here he approaches the end of the Green Monster's exit ramp, just 400M from the finish. He placed 41st with a 15K time of 47:17. That's an average of 5:05 per mile for 9.3 miles.

Next up for Llano and Wilson will be Richmond's Fred Hardy Invitational to be held on the University of Richmond campus March 25 & 26, 2011.

Llano will run the 10K under the lights, an event he earned NCAA All-America honors in last year (He had a 2010 season best of 28:51.), while Jon Wilson will compete in the 3K on Saturday afternoon (March 26)... For a link to the time schedule for the Fred Hardy Invitational go HERE

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND
- Both of the University of Richmond's cross country teams earned 2010 NCAA Division I All-Academic Cross Country status, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced. This is the ninth consecutive year that both the men and women's teams have made the list.

"We are very proud of the effort our men and women put into their academic work," said men's head coach Steve Taylor. "They are, after all, here at the University of Richmond to earn their degrees in their chosen field or fields of study. As we have said, this is one of our primary goals each and every year." ............Read More of the Article HERE

Richmond's Benford races to 13:59.99 for 5K at Notre Dame

Andrew Benford ran a personal best in the 5K tonight in South Bend, IN at the Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational.

Andrew Benford placed 3rd in the 5K tonight
taking the lead with 1000M to go.
Two weeks ago he won the 3K and 5K races
at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships,
setting a meet record in the 3K.

The field came together seeking the NCAA automatic qualifying time. When the race began the designated rabbit took the pace on target through 400m in 65 seconds. The following 400m was slow as the lead pack went through 800m in 2:15. The leaders passed 1600M in 4:27 and 3200M in 8:56. With roughly 1000M to go Benford took command of the lead and forced the pace throwing in a 64.8 second lap with only BYU's, Nathan Ogden and Auburn's, Ben Cheruiyot covering his move. Over the final 400M both pulled away as Benford covered the final 600M in 1:41.4 to finish the 5K race in 13:59.99.

WATCH BENFORD"S RACE HERE:

Benford’s 5K splits: 65.5/2:15.7 (70.2) @800M/3:20.1 (64.4)/4:27.5 (67.5) at 1600M/5:35.2 (67.7)/6:42.7 (67.5)/7:47.5 (64.7)/8:56.1 (68.6) @3200M/10:03.7 (67.5)/11:13.5 (69.7)/12:18.3 (64.8)/13:24.1 (66.2)/13:59.99 (35.2) for 5K

Andrew Benford Quote: “I felt great. At 800M (2:15) I knew we were too slow and at the mile (4:27) we obviously had to pick up the pace. I was chopping my stride for the first 2 miles (8:56.1) and with about 1000m to go I decided it was time to go and took the lead. The next 800M was quick and that might have hurt my chances of running a little faster because I slowed over the final 200m. I obviously wanted to qualify for the NCAA Championships but I’m still happy to run under 14 minutes.”

Coach Taylor Quote: “Andrew ran a great race. I wish the rabbit had taken it out faster but in all it was an excellent race. I’m happy he ran under 14 minutes (13:59.99). It’s an impressive accomplishment, especially during the indoor season. Andrew races with heart. When he steps on the track it’s pure and he has no fear of anyone or anything. I hope everyone watched it on FloTrack… This was a fun race to watch. “
