The University of Richmond announced last week the addition of Greg Lambert as an assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach.
Prior to joining the Spiders’ staff, Lambert worked as a coach and recruiter at the 5 Star Track Club in Hampton, Virginia, while assisting with the men’s track and field team at his alma mater, Coppin State University, in Baltimore, Md.
“We are happy to have Greg join our staff,” said women’s head coach Lori Taylor. “He understands our expectations and goals for our teams and is looking forward to coaching our current athletes and to recruiting new talent to our University. He has experience and will be an integral part of our staff as we continue building a program recognized nationally. We want athletes competing at the NCAA Championships across the disciplines of track & field and Steve and I believe Greg is the person we need to continue the development of athletes within our program. Coaching current team members in the sprint, hurdles and jumps along with recruiting our next generation of Spider elite are his first priorities.”
Lambert graduated from Coppin State University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. While at Coppin State, he worked as an assistant coach with the men’s track and field team.
After graduating, he traveled to Dover, Delaware where he received his master’s degree in sports management at Delaware State University. While pursuing his M.A., Lambert served as the track and field graduate assistant coach for the men’s track and field team.
The following year Lambert worked as an intern assistant track & field coach at American University.
Throughout his career, Lambert achieved great heights in the sport of track and field. When asked what he considers to be the biggest highlight of his coaching career, Lambert replied, “…having two of my athletes take 3rd place finishes at the USA Jr. Nationals in the 400m hurdles and 800m and one of them making the USA JR team in the 800.”
The Spiders concluded the 2009 season with two top-ten finishes in the Atlantic 10 Conference (women: sixth, men: eight) and the appearance of 5 athletes at the NCAA Semi-Final Championship (East Region) with Matt Llano advancing to the NCAA Championship Final in the 10K where he earned All-America honors with his 9th place finish. They begin the 2010 season ready to compete with all 2009 athletes returning and both men’s and women’s teams predicted to finish in the A-10 top five. The addition of Greg Lambert will be another influential step towards the Spiders reaching their goals of another NCAA Championship appearance and a top spot in the Atlantic 10.
“This is a great honor to be at the University of Richmond and be given the opportunity to work with such a great coaching staff. This opportunity gives me the chance to give back to a sport that gave so much to me at one of its highest levels. I’m very thankful and truly blessed to be a Spider!
