WOMEN'S RACE
The 2010 Spider Alumni Open Cross Country Meet signifies the start of the season for the University of Richmond men's and women's teams...
The Spiders competed against William & Mary as they split the team into two groups the "Red" and the "Blue" teams for a competition within the competition. Running without 4 of their top runners who are healthy but waiting to open the season in 2 weeks at NC State, the Spiders easily won the meet sweeping the top 4 places over the William & Mary Tribe.

"We wanted to see our team compete", said women's Coach Lori Taylor. "We had a lot of freshmen out there today racing in their first collegiate race. The handled it well and responded during the race."

"They got in there and raced well and competed. It is a good win and should open some peoples eyes since we didn't run Amy Van Alstine (2010 NCAA National Outdoor Championship Semi-Finalist in the 5K), Nicol Traynor (2009 NCAA National Outdoor Championship Qualifier in the 5K-16:17.52), Julie Rechel (2010 NCAA National Outdoor Championships Semi-Finalist in the 10K) and Jenn Ennis."

Freshman, Jill Prentice made a statement breaking the course and meet record becoming the first athlete to break the 11:00 flat mark. Prentice is from Montgomery HS, NJ leading 3 Spider freshmen and 1 sophomore to sweep the top 4 places over William & Mary.

Sophomore, Dana Guglielmo (Ridge HS, NJ) who competed in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Championships in the 3K steeple last spring moved up throughout the race to place 2nd overall and led the "blue" team...

Freshman, Roxanne Henningson (Greenwich HS, NY) on her was to 3rd place...

Freshman, Alli Mannon (Warwick HS, PA) sprints in for 4th place...

Junior, Beth Kelly (Cardinal O'Hare HS, PA) places 6th to round out the Spiders scorers....

MEN's RACE
The men's start....

The Richmond team would be 1 point away from the win...

Spider Alum Charlie Ban ('04) leads Ryan Lee and Levi Grandt at 1200M...

Charlie continued to push the pace early...

Levi Grandt (Doddridge Co. HS, WV) on his way to victory in the men's 5K race with a time of 15:19.oo, which is 27 seconds faster than he ran last year...

It still wasn't enough for the men...they were 1 position away from winning the meet (see results below)...

"I'm pleased about a number of things", said men's coach Steve Taylor. "I never want to see our team drop a close race like this one but for 4 freshmen, 2 sophomores and 1 junior they ran well. Everyone of the returners ran substantially faster than last year so that's positive."

"So, we are looking forward to the season... We also had a few of our upper classmen that we chose not to race today. Matt Llano (2010 NCAA All-American in the 10K), Andrew Benford (12th at the 2009 World Mountain Running Championships), Tim Quinn (2009 A-10 All-Conference in XC) and Jon Wilson did not run today."

Freshman, Ryan Lee (Archmere Academy, DE) placed 5th (15:30.99) and broke the freshman course and meet records by 8 seconds...

Sophomore, Jason Skipper (Pittsford Mendon HS, NY) continues his comeback to place 6th in 15:51.4 which is an improvement of 36 seconds over his time from last year...

Sophomore, Conor Phelan (Pittsford Sutherland HS, NY) placed 9th improving by 24 seconds from last year...
Freshman, Adam Owens (Clarke Co. HS, VA) ran 16:11.8 to place 10th....

Redshirt Freshman, Kyle Ragan (State College HS, PA) showed the greatest improvement for the Spiders. He ran 16:26.14 to improve by 1 minute and 7 seconds over his time from last year.
Freshman, Patrick Love (Manhassett HS, NY) placed 16th...
