Cold temperatures greeted runners while current Richmond Spider 3k Steeple All-American, NICOL TRAYNOR (UR '12/Ridge HS, NJ) won the women's portion of 2011 Ryan Jobes Memorial 5K race in a course record time of 17:46.87, breaking former WVU All-American standout Jennifer Davis 2006 course record of 18:06.50.
Traynor, who has personal bests of 4:21 in the 1500M, 10:02 in the 3K Steeple and 16:09 in the 5K all set on the track during the 2011 outdoor season, recently ran 26:35 for 8K in the HCA Virginia 8K in Richmond, VA to place 3rd in the women's portion of international event.
Graduated University of Richmond Spider 3K Steeple All-American, '09 WV Track Athlete of the Year and local hometown standout ANDREW BENFORD (UR '11/Ravenswood HS,WV) won today's race in 15:15.70.
Benford has qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team trials to be held this June in Eugene, OR with his 8:39 performance in the 3K Steeple in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Championships. For Benford, today's race is his fastest effort in the 6th annual event (Benford's past results: 2011-15:15.70-1st/2010-15:51.5-1st/2009-15:27.14-1st/2008-15:41-3rd/2007-15:38.41-1st/2006-16:36.6-5th).
"This (race) has become part of my Christmas holidays," explained Benford. "Ryan was a big part in my decision to run at Richmond and running in this race allows a lot of us to keep him in our memories."
Spider Track & Field/XC Assistant Coach JON MOLZ (UR '08/Commack HS, NY)and teammate to Ryan Jobes placed 2nd in 15:44.62. Molz, who races for New Balance-Richmond, is a former multiple-time conference champion for the Spiders.
The race has become a Mid-Ohio Valley annual tradition for the local running community, family and friends of Ryan Jobes. Take a look back as Ryan Jobes anchored his 4x400M Relay team at the 2003 WV State T&F Championships. The last event of the meet after he already won the 400M, 800M, and 1600M races earlier in the meet:
As Jon Molz said: "If you enjoy track and field and have less than four minutes to spare...watch this 4x400m relay. That's my old buddy Ryan Jobes on the anchor during the 2003 WV State Championships. Ryan Jobes had ALREADY won 3 individual WV state championships that weekend. His team had already comfortably clinched the team title. He got the baton in the final event of the weekend trailing the 400m state runner-up. Yet he had 3 teammates that wanted to win that 4x400m...so he had no option but to hunt him down. That's the kind of teammate he was. That's the type of teammate I try to create in coaching. I wish I got to see more of this in my life but how lucky I am to have seen just a little bit..."
