NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Senior Nicol Traynor turned in a school record and NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 16:35.38 in the 5,000 Meters at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational on Friday as she looked to qualify for next weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho.

"Nicol had a great winter of training, and even though she wanted to go faster this evening she still ran nearly 50 seconds faster than she's ever run a 5k during the indoor season," said Director of Track & Field Lori Taylor. "That's a good sign as she makes the transition to outdoors where she earned All-America honors in the 3k Steeplechase (10:02) last year and cracked the 16:10 mark for 5K. She is a tough competitor and has put in excellent work this winter. That work serves as the building blocks for an exceptional outdoor season. Now she'll turn her attention to spring break this coming week and the mountains and trails she will run."

Traynor (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) shattered Amanda Russell's previous program record of 17:11.80 set in 2005 to finish eighth in the 5,000 Meters on Friday. Her feat comes just two weeks after setting a new conference and school record in the 3,000 Meters with a time of 9:29.20 at February's A-10 Championships. Traynor was also a part of the winning DMR team, which combined for an 11:39.03 to establish another conference and facility record.

The senior standout ranks atop the conference in each of her primary events, boasting the fastest time of any runner in the 3,000 Meters while also holding the top 1-Mile time of 4:46.57 recorded at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 3. Traynor has turned in the league's second-fastest time in the 1,000 Meters (2:51.43) as well...

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Nicol Traynor travels to Notre Dame this weekend looking to meet the NCAA Indoor Championship qualifying standard of in the 5,000 Meters at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational. The 2011 All-American will make the trip alongside Director of Track & Field Lori Taylor.

"Nicol had a great meet at the Atlantic 10 Championships and has shown she is ready for a great effort at Notre Dame," said Director of Track & Field Lori Taylor. "This weekend's invitational is one of the top events in the nation for student-athletes looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships next weekend. Since Nicol has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to be held this summer in Eugene, Ore., we've taken a little more conservative approach to her indoor season. With that in mind, this weekend will be her first 5,000 Meters race of the 2012 season. We are looking for a good, competitive race."

Traynor (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) set a new conference and school record in the 3,000 Meters with a time of 9:29.20 at February's A-10 Championships. She was also a part of the winning DMR team, which combined for an 11:39.03 to establish another conference and facility record.
