San Diego, Calif. - Four Spiders participated in the
USATF Cross Country Championships this past weekend in San Diego, Calif. against the nation's best cross country athletes.
"This is a great event and an opportunity our athletes took advantage of," said women's head coach Lori Taylor. "Each of them ran well and represented our program with their performances.
On Friday, freshman Ryan Lee competed in the Junior Men's race and placed 21st overall (26:04).
"Ryan Lee placing 21st in the junior men's race was a good race and puts him into the right mental position as we move toward the outdoor track season. He has the potential for a great career in this sport."
As for the Open Men's race on Saturday,
redshirt-senior Matt Llano placed 21st with a time of 37:28 and
redshirt-senior Jon Wilson finished 37
th with a time of 38:51.
"Matt Llano and Jon Wilson ran in the senior men's race and also ran well. Matt's goal was a top 15 finish. He went out with the leaders and ran really well through 5K. After a rough 2K he began to start rolling again picking people off throughout the final 2K."
Redshirt-senior Amy Van
Alstine was the only Spider female to participate at the Championships, and she finished 23rd in the Open Women's race with a time of 29:55.
"Amy Van
Alstine ran well after last weekend's 9:42 in the 3K. She sustained a slight injury during that race but managed to come back with a good effort here. She was running in the top 20 with our nation's best female distance runners through 6K before the distance caught up to her. I'm proud of her effort. She always gives her best effort and is a racer...She's a true competitor."
