2011 USATF National Championships (Day 3-Women's 3KSC Semi-Finals)-Eugene, OR

Spider Junior Nicol Traynor (Ridge HS, NJ), who recently earned All-America honors in the 3K Steeplechase, is shown in the USATF National Championship Semi-Final in the event.  Traynor finished a great year for the Spiders by placing 13th in Heat 2 with a mark of 10:17.92.  Earlier this season she set a school record of 10:02.15 in the 3K SC at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, IA.  She also ran 16:10.37 in the 5,000M at the Mt SAC Relays. The Oregon Ducks?  This one flew in on cue following the last event...After landing on the field it walked directly to the steeple pit. (Mike Scott Photo)

Luke took a photo of me while we waited for Nicol's race...
Me sitting with Brett Walton (UR '06- He lives in Seattle now and was the 2006 Atlantic 10 Conference Decathlon Champion his senior year) and Spider freshman, Ryan Lee waiting for Nicol to race.

Andrew Benford watching the races at Hayward Field...He missed the 3K Steeplechase final by 1 spot the night before.  For details of his race go HERE.

Luke wanted to do some of the activities set-up for the younger crowd...

Luke's next event was the high jump...We are really going to have to work on his penultimate step...

Even though Nicol Traynor and Ryan Lee were not able to go since they were preparing for their races...Andrew Benford, Assistant Coach Jon Molz and me headed to "Track Town Pizza".  Likely the only pizza place in the country that looks the same as it did 30 years ago...only a few newer track & field athletes photos on the walls.

THE MORNING RUN....BEFORE THE MEET...
24 years ago, during my senior year of college, I spent the week prior to the NCAA Championships in Eugene.  There was time to explore the area back then, which I did.  After finding an exceptional place to trout fish in 1988 I have always wanted to return to that same spot, but I had no idea where it was...That is until this trip...

Above is the covered bridge I crossed 24 years ago on my way to finding a place to fish,..leading to a no name creek with a lot of rainbow trout
Jon Molz and Andrew Benford (he finished 8th in Ht 2 of the 3KSC the night before) joined me in my search for this gate and bridge.  We actually found it pretty easily considering it's been 24 years since I ran up into the mountains from this spot.

The creek under this bridge is where I caught roughly 30 rainbow trout back in 1988...

The trees lining the road into the wilderness.  The roads are gated so the only way in is on foot or mountain bike.  We saw no one...or sign of anyone...

And another wild flower...

And another wild flower...

And yet another wild flower...
THE AFTERNOON RUN...
Roughly 15 miles south of Eugene, OR on Highway 58 you will find this covered bridge leading into the town of Lowell.

(L-R) Jon  Molz, Andrew Benford and Ryan Lee...Dexter Reservoir in the background...

This time of the year the salmon are running making a fisherman's paradise.  We were told this dam was a great place to view thousands of salmon as they returned to their spawning area.  We were told accurate information...

Dexter Reservoir south of Eugene, OR.

Hundreds and Hundreds of salmon were trying to get into the hatchery where they were born.  Amazing to watch as the banged at the gates wanting IN...Yes, they wanted INTO the hatchery.

Ryan Lee even captured a few trying to jump into the hatchery...Again, amazing if you have never seen it.  Simply amazing.

Here you can see salmon waiting to have their eggs removed.  The hatchery increases the survival of the eggs by 25-30 times what would survive naturally.

Oregon Wildflowers sought of the Dexter Reservoir.

Thousands of salmon were in this river...
You really needed a net.
