Jon Molz Keeps Running...A Way Of Life.

After a standout running career for the Spiders, Jon Molz is in his second year as a member of the Richmond Track & Field and Cross Country Coaching Staff. Molz continues performing at the elite level as an athlete, while balancing his coaching career. He has established himself as one of the top road racers in Virginia and the Eastern US.

On March 27th he showed his fitness by becoming the first USA runner to cross the finish line of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K in Richmond. This year’s race brought together a record number of runners as more than 37,000 competitors lined up for the “Monument Avenue” course through historic Richmond. Molz finished 6th over-all in front of nearly all of the 37,365 entrants. His time of 30:51 for the 10K course was the top among US born runners within the international field of contestants.

Jon Molz won the CASA Superhero 5K this past weekend.

Molz returned to the roads this past Saturday (April 10) for the CASA Superhero 5K Run presented by Nike. A crowd of over 400 competitors came together for the race and as the gun sounded to signal the race start Molz went to the lead pulling away to win by over 2 minutes with a time of 14:55.0. He ran even splits of 4:48 for the first mile, 4:48 for the second mile and 4:49 for the final mile to easily win.

The 5K event benefited the Henrico and Chesterfield Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children programs. On Saturday over 400 caring people came together as a league of superheroes - to help make a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children and to increase awareness of the challenges they face on a daily basis.

Molz, a 2008 University of Richmond graduate and former standout middle-distance runner for the Spiders, was a two-time Atlantic-10 Conference Champion in Indoor Track & Field, winning the 1000m as a sophomore in 2006 and anchoring the first ever Spiders DMR victory as a junior in 2007. In addition to a total of five All-Conference honors during his tenure, Molz also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor East Regional Championships his senior year by running 9:04 for the 3K steeplechase at the Penn Relays.

While a Spider, Molz was also two-time Academic All-Conference selection in cross country and following his senior campaign, Molz earned a spot on the USTCCA Academic All-America Team.

Since graduating, Molz has continued his career on the road-racing scene running 1:07for the Half Marathon and finishing 5th at the 2009 Richmond Marathon in his debut at the distance.

Along with becoming one of the premier road racers in Virginia, he is a regular on the Richmond circuit. Molz graduated from Richmond in 2008 with degree in psychology and in 2009 graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a masters degree in Sports Management.

In High School during the 2004 indoor track & field season his Commack High School (NY) team ran 10:25.32 (third) in the DMR at the Holiday Classic... he was a member of the record setting 4x800 relay that ran 7:55.27 at the NY State Meet Qualifier... his 3,200 relay team placed fifth at the New York State Championships (7:57.33) ... helped his team to a 8:03.98 performance in the 4x800 relay at the Collegiate Invitational in NYC.
